Lions of Ansteorra, Defenders of the Dream

The Order of the Lions of Ansteorra is a unique and very special order here in Ansteorra. Their Majesties Jonathan and Willow created the lions during the first reign of the Kingdom with the intent that the lions should embody what is best in the society. Since that time, the Order of the Lions has become one of the most respected and revered orders in the Kingdom.

Ansteorrans commonly try to explain exactly what a Lion is, but often have a difficult time doing so. This is probably because the criteria of what makes a Lion is different to everyone. Simply put, a Lion is someone whom the Crown feels best exemplifies the ideals of the SCA. Many people define a Lion as someone who, through their actions and appearance, makes the game of the SCA more real or more special. This is why the Order's entire name includes the title "Defenders of the Dream".

As the lions are a unique order, there are many unique qualities and aspects of the order. It is written in Kingdom law that only one Lion may be made per reign. Although the Lion carries no precedence and no rank, it is one of the most coveted and most respected awards that an Ansteorran may receive. Through years of custom, the Lions have become the stewards of the Sword of State and are the only order that is allowed to come unbidden into the royal court. At every coronation, the Order of the Lions comes before the Crown that is preparing to step down and requests the Sword from the hand of the king. The Lions are entrusted with the Sword and charged by the outgoing monarch to hold the Sword and present it to His rightful successor.

As you review the list of the Order of the Lions, you will see a group of highly diverse individuals who have varied opinions and interests. However, one thing is true of all of them: all of the Lions keep Ansteorra and her dreams close to their hearts.
