Table of Contents:

Introduction.

This is an index of heraldic submissions for Ansteorra, a kingdom in the Society for Creative Anachronism (SCA). (If you don't know what "the SCA" and "Ansteorra" are, this index is of no use to you!)

It can be used to find the status of some item or of all items from a group, to locate items that have been lost in the works, to find submission history when doing commentary, et cetera.

This index includes every item in an ILoI, ILoAR, or LoAR for a range of years--see the top of the main page for the exact range. For items that appeared then but started life before the start date, their back history from earlier letters is also listed.

Nota bene! This is an index, NOT the set of original documents. Some errors doubtless exist. Please tell me when you find any. Ideally, you should use this to look up the real documents (the Armorial, LoARs, ILoARs, ILoIs) and confirm the information there. They may also explain why the action happened as it did. Check the Armorial for the registered spelling, date, and/or blazon, but remember that earlier entries may not show accented letters.

Nota bene! The names here are not guaranteed to be precise. When a name has its spelling changed at various stages, I have "normalized" it to the last spelling used. However, I have created "see" entries to point from original spellings to the final version.

The Submission Process And Its Terminology.

A name or armory submission starts in an Internal Letter of Intent (ILoI) within a monthly issue of the Ansteorran Gazette (AG), the heraldic newsletter of the Ansteorran College of Heralds. About two months later, after commentary, a monthly kingdom meeting is held to rule on the ILoI. The results are announced in some month's AG as an Internal Letter of Acceptances and Returns (ILoAR). The accepted submissions are sent to Laurel Sovereign of Arms (Laurel) in a Letter of Intent (LoI). Four months later, after commentary, Laurel accepts (registers) or returns each one, as shown in the month's Laurel Letter of Acceptances and Returns (LoAR).

Fast-track items are cases that are so clear-cut that Asterisk Herald can accept or reject them at once, with neither commentary nor kingdom meeting. They are listed and numbered in a separate section of an AG. The accepted ones go onto the next available LoI. There may also be errata corrections, pends of items for more information, or withdrawals of items.

The Format, With An Example.

A traditional-style example may help.

Ansteorra. (Ansteorra)
Award name for Award of the Rising Star.
Fast-track accepted 5/01 (AG 9/01) 3.
Kingdom errata 6/01.
Laurel returned 9/01.
Anomaly: transition fta to ke.
".
Award name appeal to laurel for Award of the Rising Star.
Fast-track accepted 9/02 1.
Laurel registered 1/03.

The award name "Award of the Rising Star" was fast-tracked directly to the Letter of Intent of May 2001 as item #3, also published in the September 2001 Ansteorran Gazette. Another mention of the item was also made on the June 2001 Letter of Intent, which is noted here as errata. It was returned by Laurel in the LoAR for the meeting of September 2001; I provide a link to the on-line Laurel letter for those who want to read Laurel's reasons. It was accepted at kingdom and then had an errata corraction. That is what caused the Anomaly flag: it's a "transition anomaly".

The name was appealed back to Laurel on the September 2002 Letter of Intent as item #1, and was accepted by Laurel in the LoAR of January 2003.

Terms And Flags Within The Data.

A transition is the movement of a submission from one stage to the next. The normal flow of a submission is to appear in an ILoI, two months later to be accepted in the ILoAR to be passed to Laurel, then four months after that to be registered in an LoAR. Alternately, a submission can appear as a fast-track item, and then four months after that to be registered in an LoAR. Nothing more should happen to a submission after it is returned, after it is withdrawn, after Laurel registers it, or after it declared as "done" in this Index. If a submission is pended in an ILoAR, it should appear in a later ILoAR as accepted or returned, and if accepted proceed to Laurel as usual. If a submission is pended in an LoAR, it should appear in a later LoAR as accepted or returned. Errata may occur at any time. Any other transition is an anomaly.

These are flags for conditions that can occur for a submission recorded in the data. The web pages have the spelled-out text. The miscellaneous text files abbreviate each flag to one character, as shown in parentheses.

Anomaly (?).
An anomaly of some sort may exist. There was a question mark in the database entry, or the item apparently made an odd transition in its processing. The reason is at the end of the entry. A transition error can be spurious, e. g. for name or device releases or transfers.
In Progress (I).
The item has not yet been finally ruled on. That is, it has not yet been registered by Laurel, returned, withdrawn, or marked "done" in this Index.
Overdue (O).
It's in progress and some other item from its last letter (or later) has made progress. For example, suppose a item's last recorded action was to be accepted by kingdom in the 2/98 AG, but every other item reported on in that AG was later ruled on by Laurel. The one item is overdue.
Pended (P).
It's in progress, and the last action for the item was to pend it: to suspend it for a definite or indefinite time while some problem is resolved. One usual reason is because of a publication error: wrong information was published (e. g., a blazon that does not match the armory); it was corrected, but the commentary period had to be redone. Another reason is if a name and armory were submitted together and the kingdom meeting returns the name but the armory was acceptable. Armory cannot be sent to Laurel Sovereign of Arms without a name.

About This Data.

Ansteorran Gazettes occurred each month from 9/92 thru present, except for 12/92, 2/93, 4/93, 7/93, 5/94, 8/94, 9/94, 9/95, 8/00, 9/00, 12/00, 1/01, 3/01, 4/01, 5/01, 6/01, and 6/07. All the AGs that were published had ILoIs except 4/96, 1/00, 10/01, 1/02, and 2/02. There was no 6/07 ILoI. Results of kingdom meetings were in all but 3/93, 7/94, 1/95, 3/95, 6/95, 7/95, 10/95 thru 12/95, 2/96, 3/96, 7/96, 8/96, 10/96, 1/00, 4/00, 7/00 thru 2/01 (kingdom acceptances were printed in 7/01 thru 12/01, but not kingdom returns), and 3/07 thru 5/07. There was an extra letter from Star postmarked 15 August 1995 which included results but no ILoI; I call it "AG 8/95a". Two corrections to the 10/95 ILoI were printed in the 11/95 AG: these two items I list as ILoI "11/95a". One correction to the 8/99 ILoI was printed in the 9/99 AG; this item I list as ILoI "9/99a". Three corrections to the 4/03 ILoI were printed in the 5/03 AG; these items are listed as ILoI "5/03a".

Laurel LoARs occurred once in each month, though not all of them had Ansteorran actions. The Laurel letter dated "November 34, 1993" is deemed the 11/93 letter.

An Ansteorran Gazette which is a multiple-month issue, such as Aug-Sept-Oct 1994, is shown as the last month, here 10/94. Likewise ILoIs which combine several months, such as October-November 2000, are shown as the last month, here 11/00. ILoI items are shown as, e. g., "1/93 4", the 1/93 ILoI, item number 4. The ILoI month is the month of the Ansteorran Gazette it appears in. Kingdom LoARs are shown as, e. g., "9/93 (AG 10/93)", meaning the kingdom College of Heralds meeting of 9/93, as reported in the Ansteorran Gazette of 10/93. Fast-tracks, those items which skip the ILoI and go straight to the kingdom decision meeting, are generally also shown as the month in which the decision was made. Laurel LoARs are shown as, e. g., "4/94", meaning the Laurel meeting for April of 1994; the date on the LoAR cover letter is ignored. The date of Laurel errata letters is given as that of the accompanying LoAR.

Deficiency: Some items may be marked as pended or overdue when they've clearly been superceded. For example, if someone had a pended device and then submitted another, the first has been superceded. I've marked some I know about using the "done" action (declaring them done manually), but others have doubtless lasted.

Branches Gone But Not Forgotten.

I used the last known name for each branch. If no branch name was shown for a submission, I used "unknown" or the branch for other items for the same submitter. The branch headings below use the current registered name, if any.

The following branches had actions but now have a newer name, have a name that is currently not registered, and/or are apparently dormant or defunct: Bisons Run (was Heron's Keep; defunct; Bartlesville, OK), Black Oak Keep (defunct; Greenville, TX), Bois d'Argent (defunct, now a household; Conroe, TX), Cridhe na Tir (now Tír Medóin), Crossroads Keep (now Crossrode Keep), Cypress Hills (defunct; Longview, TX), Desert Wyndes (defunct; Pampa, TX), Dùn an Locha Ruaidh (now Loch Ruadh), Dun Bruthainn (and Dun Brodail et al; now Westgate), Gryphon's Rooste (defunct; Muskogee, OK), Inis Feinics (was Isle of the Golden Phoenix; absorbed back into Ravensfort; Cleveland, TX), Loch Gaothach (returned; defunct; Blanchard, OK), Loch Raeburn (defunct; Lufkin, TX), Loch Wyndt (unregistered; defunct; Marlow, OK), Rathad Le An Caisteal (Crossrode Keep; withdrawn), Rivertree (now Stonebridge Keep), Rundel (was Gnome Vale, Gnomon Vale, Glomedel; withdrawn; defunt; McAlester, OK), Turris Animarum (dormant 3/95; Austin, TX, Univ. of Texas, a college of Bryn Gwlad), Turris Aquilae (was Hillsfar Haven; dissolved into Adlersruhe; Burger, TX), Twr Cath (dormant 6/97?, Univ. of Houston, TX, college in Stargate).
